Process pilot plant (VERA)

Intelligent methods are needed for process supervision and control of technological systems. This is the focus for the institute of Automation and Computer Control. Research is geared to new modeling, analysis and control methods with three focal points:

  • Control theory
  • Modeling and design of hybrid (mixed continuous-discrete) systems, and
  • Process diagnosis and fault-tolerant control.

The theoretical results are put to the test with the institute's experimental plants and in cooperation with industry. Studies on automotive systems and projects in the process industry demonstrate the broad range of applications.

The results have met with broad interest in the international control engineering community. A number of the institute's projects have been funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Currently, the institute is coordinating the priority program "Control Theory of Digitally Networked Dynamical Systems" with 18 research topics. Foreign guests regularly extend the Institute's research activities, including numerous scholarship holders of the Humboldt Foundation. Among others, the institute cooperates with European partners within the Networks of Excellence HYCON on hybrid dynamic systems. Well-known speakers from Germany and abroad participate in the Automation Colloquium and in the workshops organized by the institute.
